How a board-level interview differs from an executive interview
Board and non-executive director (NED) interviews assess a genuinely different skill set from operational executive roles: governance judgement, independent challenge and scrutiny of management, and strategic oversight rather than day-to-day operational leadership. Panels want confidence that you can constructively challenge and support the executive team simultaneously, without either rubber-stamping decisions or overstepping into operational management that is not the board's role.
Common questions and how to answer them
"How would you constructively challenge an executive decision you disagreed with?" Show a considered, evidence-based, respectful approach to challenge, rather than either avoiding conflict or being unnecessarily combative. "What experience do you bring to our specific governance and risk landscape?" Be specific about relevant sector, regulatory, or governance experience rather than a generic answer about board experience in the abstract. "How do you balance supporting management with independent oversight?" Show genuine understanding that both matter simultaneously, since a board that only challenges or only supports is not doing its job well.
How to prepare
Research the organisation's current strategic priorities, governance structure, and any relevant regulatory or sector-specific risks in real depth, since board interviews expect a genuinely informed perspective, not general interest. Prepare specific examples of independent judgement and constructive challenge from any board, committee, or senior leadership experience you have.
