What numerical reasoning tests actually assess
A numerical reasoning test presents a table, chart, or short passage of data (sales figures, percentages, ratios, currency conversions) and asks you to answer questions using that information, usually with a calculator allowed. The maths involved is rarely more advanced than GCSE level: percentages, ratios, averages, and basic algebra. The difficulty comes from interpreting data quickly under time pressure, not from the calculations themselves.
Banks, consultancies, accountancy firms, and most large graduate schemes use numerical reasoning tests because the ability to extract the right figures from a busy table under pressure closely mirrors real analyst and finance work. A candidate who is strong at maths but slow at reading data under time pressure often scores lower than expected on their first attempt.
How the test is timed and scored
Most numerical reasoning tests give around 45 to 75 seconds per question, and most candidates cannot complete every question in the time allowed, which is intentional. Scoring is usually based on the number of correct answers within the time limit, sometimes adjusted against the average score of other candidates rather than a fixed pass mark. This means leaving easy questions unanswered to spend extra time on one difficult question is almost always the wrong trade-off.
The mistakes that cost the most marks
Misreading the units in a table (thousands versus millions, or percentages versus absolute values) is the single most common error, and it is entirely avoidable with a slower first read of the table headers before answering any question. Spending too long on one difficult question instead of moving on and returning later, if time allows, is the second most common mistake: every unanswered easy question is a guaranteed lost mark, while a difficult question you are stuck on may cost you several easy ones elsewhere in the same time.
A practical preparation plan

On the day, read every table's units and headers fully before touching the questions, answer the questions you find fastest first, and flag anything you are unsure of to revisit only if time remains.
