Why this negotiation is different

Relocation adds a second negotiation on top of salary: moving costs, temporary housing, and sometimes a spouse or partner's job search, all of which are real expenses the base salary conversation doesn't cover. If you're moving from a lower cost-of-living area to a higher one, you have a strong, specific case for a higher number, but be careful with the reverse: moving to a lower cost-of-living area doesn't automatically mean you should accept a lower offer if the company's pay band for the role is otherwise unchanged, some companies apply cost-of-living adjustments and some pay a flat national band regardless of location.

A specific script and approach

Separate the two asks clearly: "I'm excited to make this move. On base salary, given the cost-of-living difference and the market rate for this role in [new city], I'd like to discuss [X]. Separately, could we talk about relocation support, covering moving costs and possibly temporary housing for the first month?" Keeping salary and relocation as two distinct line items makes it easier for the hiring manager to say yes to each individually rather than feeling like you're stacking asks into one big number.

Common mistakes

Don't assume relocation assistance is automatically included, always ask explicitly since many companies only offer it if you raise it. Don't skip researching the actual cost-of-living difference between the two cities, a vague "it's more expensive there" claim is much weaker than citing a specific comparison. And don't accept a relocation package with a repayment clause (having to repay moving costs if you leave within a year) without reading it carefully and asking about the exact terms.

Frequently asked questions

Should I ask for a lump sum or itemized relocation reimbursement?
A lump sum gives you more flexibility to spend it how you need (movers, flights, deposit on a new place) without submitting receipts, while itemized reimbursement can sometimes cover a larger total if your actual costs are high. Ask which the company typically offers, then negotiate within that structure rather than assuming one is standard.
Does relocating to a lower cost-of-living city mean I should expect a pay cut?
Not necessarily, it depends on whether the company uses location-based pay bands or a single national band for the role. Ask directly how they set pay across locations before assuming a cut is expected, some companies pay the same rate regardless of where you live.
