- Using a level, square, or multimeter correctly and explaining the reading

In electrical work you might be asked to demonstrate proper use of wire strippers, a torque screwdriver, or a non-contact voltage tester. In plumbing it could be pipe wrenches, a torch, or a drain camera. In HVAC it is often gauges, a multimeter, and refrigerant recovery equipment.
How to Prepare Without Overthinking It
If you have real hands-on time in the trade, the best preparation is reviewing tools you have not touched recently rather than the ones you use daily. Think through the last few jobs where you used something unusual, like a specialty fitting or a rented tool, and refresh your memory on how it works.
If you are earlier in your career or coming from an apprenticeship program, walk through your toolbox at home and name each tool out loud along with its purpose and one safety note. This sounds basic but it catches gaps fast, especially for tools you own but rarely use.
Common Mistakes Candidates Make
The most common failure is not lack of knowledge but nervous fumbling. Take a breath, hold the tool the way you normally would on the job, and narrate what you are doing if it helps you stay calm. Interviewers generally read confident, methodical handling as more important than lightning speed.
The second common mistake is guessing instead of admitting you are unsure. If you are handed something you genuinely do not recognize, say so honestly and explain how you would figure it out, like checking a manufacturer stamp or asking a coworker. That honest answer often lands better than a confident wrong guess.
A third mistake is skipping safety steps out of habit when being watched changes your rhythm. Candidates who normally work safely sometimes rush through a demonstration and forget to de-energize a circuit before testing it, or skip eye protection because it feels like just a quiz. Evaluators notice this immediately, since it suggests the safety habit is not actually automatic on real jobs either.
How to Practice at Home Before the Interview
If you have access to your own tools, set aside twenty minutes to physically handle each one and say out loud what it is for, one safety consideration, and one common mistake people make with it. This kind of active recall works far better than just reading a list of tool names, because the tool test itself is a physical, hands-on exercise, not a written quiz.
If you are early in your career and do not own a full set yet, ask a friend, mentor, or instructor if you can spend an hour in their shop or garage reviewing tools you are less familiar with. Trade schools and community colleges with shop programs are often open to letting former students come back for a short refresher session too.
How Tool Tests Differ Across Trades
The specific format shifts quite a bit depending on the trade. Electrical tool tests often focus heavily on meters and testers, since misreading a voltage tester incorrectly can be dangerous, while carpentry tool tests lean toward measuring, marking, and cutting accuracy. Automotive and diesel roles frequently test diagnostic scan tools and torque wrenches, since correct torque specs matter for safety and warranty compliance.
If you are applying across more than one type of shop, ask what the role actually involves day to day before the interview so you know which category of tools to brush up on. A generalist tool review is fine as a baseline, but focused review on the specific work you will be doing pays off more.
